Over three years ago Harry Puttock (Rockcote Representative – Central) investigated us being allowed as an alternative to the original specified product for one of Wellington’s largest weathertight remedial projects. The project ‘Stadium Gardens’.

This very well known project sits directly adjacent to the Wellington Stadium so most Wellingtonian’s were aware of the issues due mainly to the large tent covering the entire building for the remediation process.
Don and the team at Totara Coatings were successful in securing this major tender. Original cladding of direct fixed fibre cement sheet, was completely removed and reinstated with Monotek, and the Rockcote Monotek Finishing System with the added layer of full fibre glass mesh to the entire wall surface. Finished with Resene Aquashield to provide a superhydrophobic mineral paint system to the main levels, and the ground level completed with Resene Cool Colour black (over masonry) with Resene Graffitti Shield to add a solid and durable solution that will resist the carnage of the annual sevens tournament. Believe it or not – all this was undertaken with building being tenanted. An awesome result that will stand the test of Wellington’s weather extreme’s.

UPDATE:  Removed reference to incorrect statement ‘European coating system’ being removed off the existing building

image This seminar will be focusing on a number of significant changes announced in the documents supporting two key Building Code clauses – B1 Structure and E2 External moisture. The B1 changes incorporate learning from the Canterbury earthquakes, and for E2, a technical update to reflect recent research and changes in building practices.

It’s nearly halfway through May already and we are fast approaching the first of the CMS National Roadshow Breakfasts for the year. We kick these off this year in Nelson on May 24th.

If you have never been along to a CMS National Roadshow before, they are well worth checking out, and not just because of the delicious (free!) cooked breakfasts. Guest speakers this year include Carters on the innovative design applications of timber, and the Building & Construction ITO on industry training programmes and the role of ITO’s.

For those wanting to become licensed under the soon to be compulsory “Licensed Building Practioner” scheme, the roadshow will also be proceeded by an optional workshop hosted by the Department of Building and Housing (DBH) in association with Carters.

The CMS National Roadshow breakfast is coming to a location near you, so don’t miss out.

After the unprecedented scenes of tragedy in Canterbury of late one of their foremost motor racing stars will take to the track in Taupo this weekend endorsing the Red Cross 2011 Canterbury Earthquake Appeal.

Andy Knight of Christchurch will contest Round 6 of the BNT V8s Championship at the Taupo Motorsport Park in what will be known for the final two rounds of the championship as the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal Falcon.

The major sponsor of the car is Century Batteries but in light of the tragedy that has befallen Christchurch the company has made a wonderful gesture in having their major signage on the car removed and replaced by Red Cross Appeal signage.

The Knight family know well the devastation the quake on 22 February has caused as their business the Latimer Hotel is adjacent to Latimer Square, scene of a triage centre set up after the disaster. In addition the hotel was damaged in the earthquake and significant rebuilding work will be necessary. Prior to the February earthquake the Knight Motorsport Team had already lost their workshop in the September earthquake that shook the city. That meant the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal Falcon has been prepared in Timaru throughout the season.

However Knight is very much a Christchurch driver and the signage on the Falcon at the final two rounds of the championship – at Taupo this weekend and then again at Hamilton next month – will support the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal with the appeal website – www.redcross.org.nz adorning the sides of the car to remind people of the scale of the disaster and what they can do to help.

Knight arrives at Taupo this weekend sitting seventh in a championship which is extremely close. The former New Zealand Grand Prix winner and Toyota Racing Series champion has become a consistent frontrunner in the championship since his series debut late in 2008.

This weekend Andy and the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal Falcon begin the round with two test sessions on Saturday – the first at 10.00am followed by another at 1.10pm. Qualifying follows at 3.40pm before the top ten qualifiers advance to the top ten shootout soon after.

Racing takes place on Sunday. The first race over 10 laps is timed to start at 9.56am with the second scheduled for 12.49pm. The final race, the traditional reverse grid contest over 20 laps,

commences at 4.12pm.

Knight Motorsport and their many sponsors support the 2011 Red Cross Earthquake Appeal www.redcross.org.nz while Andy is supported in the championship by Century Batteries, Parker Stores, Milwaukee Power Tools, John Jones Steel, Mothers High Performance Car Care and The Rock FM.

This guidance only applies to houses directly affected by the Canterbury earthquake. The focus is on foundation and floor elements but it also covers common areas of ‘above the floor’ damage such as chimneys. The recommendations have been developed in cooperation with technical experts and will help to safeguard people and homes in future earthquakes.
